crc boxing brand identity
crc graphic design co-op spring 2024
While a co-op for Cincinnati Recreation Commission, I developed a brand identity for their boxing program which is comprised of clubs at three different recreation centers across Cincinnati. A distinct unifying visual identity was essential for this program since it is a combination of ages, genders, locations, and skill levels.
process
research, sketches + mood board
I began my design process by researching the history of boxing, portrayal in media, rules and regulations, terms, and moves. A comprehensive understanding of the sport allowed me to start developing sketches and a mood board for the primary logo mark design. I focused on developing a basic geometric design to communicate the structured nature of the sport, discipline, primitiveness, and a boxing ring. I also incorporated the movement aspect of the sport through the usage of line in combination with shape.
digital ideation
I developed basic sketches that I began to translate into a digital design. I took my basic glove concept that focused on line and shape with inherent meaning, and began incorporating a star. The star symbol is representative of a knockout or a champion.
final logomark
The final logo mark successfully communicates the characteristics of boxing through its design. Line and shape work in tandem to convey discipline, movement, and sportsmanship. The design is intentionally simplistic, yet effective, and efficiently utilizes negative and positive space to create a visually strong logo mark.
combination mark
The final logo mark was then combined with typography to develop a general logo for the program. The typeface selected still communicates the rigid aspect, but also gives the feeling of a vintage athletic club.
brand guidelines
The typeface used for the logo is Mono 45 Headline in Regular and Light. The colors used are derived from the brand guidelines of the Cincinnati Recreation Commission.
application samples
The logo developed will most likely be used for match advertising, merchandise, and training areas.
