NEWPORT JAZZ FESTIVAL
Systematic development of a visual identity for the Newport Jazz Festival, including a wordmark and various touchpoints.
Visual Identity
Festival Profile & Research
I worked on identifying core values of the festival and integrating visual aesthetics to communicate the desired message. I determined the core values of the Newport Jazz Festival as legacy, celebration, and unification.
Sketches
In my initial sketching I worked on ways to represent the core values of the festival along with principles of jazz music. I wanted to honor the art of jazz, and highlight the improvised layered creativity and complexity of the music. I worked on the visualization of jazz principles such as blue notes, syncopation, consonance and dissonance, polyrhythms, swing, and fusion.
Digital Ideation
I narrowed my design down to the incorporation of jazz note progression in combination with my chosen typeface. I worked on different pairings for the additional typography that accompanies the wordmark.
Final Mark
The final wordmark incorporates music notes into typography to emphasize the role of jazz music in amplifying the festival’s values of celebration, legacy, and unification.
Touchpoint Application
Wristband Design
The wristbands serve as another keepsake item for the festival. They honor the festival color palette and use of texture to create a small yet effective piece of memorabilia.
Festival Line Up Poster
I drew inspiration from the crowded format of vintage music festival line-up posters, while still incorporating modern elements. The poster serves as a yearly collectable item for festival attendees.
Animated Wordmark
I created an animation of the wordmark to play in the backdrop of the stage in between sets. The movements in the animation play off of the beats of a Thelonious Monk song. I emphasized texture as well as movement to create a visually engaging clip that represents the festival as well as the principles of jazz.
